FAQ
What is CanDo?
CanDo is a web-based, freely-distributed skills tracking program developed
by teachers and students in Arlington, Virginia. It was written to help
teachers track which skills their students are acquiring in their classes
and at what level of competency. Because CanDo is a web-based application, anyone may access it regardless of where they are, as long as they have internet access.
What is SchoolTool?
CanDo is part of a larger software project called SchoolTool. When you download CanDo, SchoolTool will also be provided, allowing CanDo to make use of several of SchoolTool's features.
What is Zope and Python?
SchoolTool is built using Zope, a piece of free software written from the Python programming language. Zope is an application server and database which may be used to create custom applications like SchoolTool and CanDo.
Why CanDo?
CanDo has several distinct advantages over other similar programs. First, both CanDo, its host program SchoolTool, and the underlying technologies of Zope and Python are 'open-source' products, meaning that they are distributed free-of-charge. Second, CanDo and SchoolTool are continually updated with input from the instructors and students using them. These updates are automatically made available for download and use, and are also free of charge
What is Free Software?
Free software -- also sometimes referred to as 'open-source' -- is software that is available without cost, completely free of charge. In addition to this, its source is viewable and modifiable by all, allowing anyone to help develop the software who wants to. CanDo, and the various engines and languages it is built on top of (SchoolTool, Zope, and Python) are all free software.
